Νέα: Το Book4Book στο WSA Congress στη Σρι Λάνκα

November 12, 2013 σε Νέα από kassie papasotiriou

Hi everybody! We would like to thank you once more for your interest and support to the Book4Book vision. This is the fourth newsletter from the Book4book team, providing a report of our presence in Colombo, Sri Lanka for the WSA Global Congress.

WSA Congress was a big hit for Book4Book and gave us a lot of ideas and opportunities to connect with people from other countries, share our ideas and form joint initiatives on common social goals related to our project. Our project was presented on the first day of the opening of the whole even. You can see Kassie presenting with Professor Bruck, chairman of the WSA on her left.

The opening of the congress was a big event at the old parliament of Colombo, with the presence of the president of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Mr Mahinda Rajapakse. The following day I had the opportunity to follow a very well organized conference program with many enlightening presentation of very high profile individuals. More over I was able to engage in smaller working groups where I got almost personal advice and training by entrepreneur consultants that helped me look into our project with a fresh eye. I also had the opportunity to connect with other social entrepreneurs and winners of the WSA and WSYA competitions and engage in very useful conversations with really smart and motivated people.

Our project was very well received and attracted a lot of interest by the organizers and the other WSA winners. I was able to start initial discussions with groups from Sri Lanka, India and Mexico that got interested in becoming the Book4Book ambassadors in their countries. I will keep everyone posted on how things develop with these possible collaborations. I also had the opportunity to have some exposure to the media which I hope will bear fruit shortly. Needless to say that the social program of the conference was really fantastic and we got the opportunity to unwind and become friends with many of the participants.

I want to thank the WSA and WSYA Organizers for giving Book4Book such an opportunity and opening ways that were previously unimaginable for our project. I also want to thank the Bodosakis Foundation of Greece that paid for my ticket to get to Sri Lanka.

The WSYA 2013 jury has selected the best 18 youth digital projects addressing the UN Millennium Development Goals worldwide

The Winners’ Ceremony Will Be Held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, fromOctober 24 to 26th

at the WSA Global Congress

Salzburg, Austria; September 11th, 2013–The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) has announced the 18 winners and the Greek project ‘Book for book’ is among them. Selected as a winner website in the Go Green category, ‘Book for book’ is a platform that aspires to host young students and parents who wish to find books online for free in a quick and easy way. The idea follows the spirit of solidarity and environmental awareness and seeks to eventually become a social network to connect students and schools so they can be able to join and massively recycle their old books of diverse educational levels from just a single access point.

“Book for book’ addresses remarkably the necessity of reducing the huge waste of natural resources” says Professor Peter Bruck, Chairman of the WSYA Board. “This project is a great initiative to raise awareness of environmental issues and a great way to connect people with the same vision of a greener planet”. This year, ‘Book for book’ is the only Greek winner of this international contest that celebrates youth best digital content addressing the UN MDGs.

The competition was fierce in 2013. Initially, 422 projects from 147 UN countries were submitted. From those choices, 12 projects will be featured as WSYA 2013 runners-up through the award network and 18 will be awarded in the winners’ event that will take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Hosted by the Sri Lankan Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and in partnership with the World Summit Award (WSA), the winners’ ceremony will be celebrated at the WSA Global Congress (October 24 to 26) featuring world-class keynote speeches, hands-on workshops and engaging panel discussions about social entrepreneurship and the content industry.

Established in 2005, The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) is a leading international competition honoring excellence on the use of Internet for social empowerment. As an annual contest it seeks to motivate young people under the age of thirty to actively contribute to the achievement of the UNMillennium Development Goals. The MDGs were set in 2000 to prompt member states and civil society to fight poverty, hunger and disease, inequalities, lack of education and environmental degradation.

United Nations Goals turned into high-tech Festival: Book4book from Greece shortlisted for prestigious Youth Award

Hundreds of digital projects compete for the annual World Summit Youth Award and European Youth Award. Book4book from Greece is one of 60 that are still in the race for the Winners’ Events in Colombo and Graz.

Athens/Salzburg, August 27, 2013
Book4book from Greece met the high demands of the online jury and enters the next round of the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) and European Youth Award (EYA) 2013 in the category Go Green!. The contests are dedicated to young developers who employ digital technologies to turn the United Nations Millennium Development Goals into action. Now Book4book competes against 59 websites, apps and other innovative youth projects. If it withstands critical inspection by a jury of internationally renowned ICT-experts, an invitation to the winners’ events in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Graz, Austria, awaits the producer.
Book4book has created a website (http://www.book4book.gr), providing the ability to match requests and exchange books of interest between school students. The platform aspires to host young students and parents who wish to find books online for free, quickly and easily. The users of the platform can offer or search for school books of a specific grade that other users living close to them may already have requested or offered, and arrange a personal meeting to a public spot for the exchange to take place. Also, school managers or students of an area can organize a meeting for mass exchanging of books of certain classes inside a school or in a public place. So Book4book can eventually establish a social network, connecting students and schools that will be able to join and massively “recycle” their old books of various educational levels from a single access point.
If the project succeeds, its creator will win a trip to the EYA Festival in Graz or the WSYA Winners’ Event Colombo – or even both. This price offers more than just an opportunity to explore two amazing cities and to encounter two entirely different cultures. At the events for young ICT-developers, the next generation of IT-pioneers will have the chance to present their project in front of a high-level audience, including business leaders from the multimedia sector and creative industry, representatives of politics and NGOs and many more.
“For me the WSYA and EYA were like a bridge between young, creative people on one side and experienced people that have worked a long time in these fields on the other”, says Darko Bozhinoski from Fyrom, who in 2012 won both contests in the category Go Green! for his project ‘Climate for Children’. Besides unique network opportunities, the event-agendas feature workshops, seminars and keynote sessions dealing with the most important topics of the future. The absolute highlight of both events is the Award Ceremony and Gala at which the winners will be honored.

The six categories of the WSYA and EYA:
Fight Poverty, Hunger and Disease!
Education for All!
Power 2 Women!
Create your Culture!
Go Green!
Pursue Truth!
Book4book is nominated in Go Green!.

Νέα: Το πρώτο μας newsletter και μία διεθνής διάκριση για το Book4Book

June 27, 2013 σε Νέα από kassie papasotiriou

Dear Book4Book members,
The Book4Book team would like to thank you for your support and the genuine intention to
tackle a social issue through collaborative, social contribution. This warms our hearts as it tells us
that we are not alone in imagining a better society. Our vision is to establish a popular online
non-profit social network that will assist teachers, students and parents in exchanging their old
books, to reduce the huge waste of trees and resources taking place every school year. We
believe that the institution of school should convey the eco-conscious to students as an integral
part of their education.
To this end, we are constantly trying to make our platform better with new ideas and features.
Recently, we updated the site adding an English version, as our visitors and members now extend
beyond the Greek borders. We are also adding new user roles and groups (soon to be ready in
the next platform version), where we plan to highlight all bookstores that currently contribute in
our effort, in order to give them credit for their participation.
We would also like you to know that the social value of Book4Book is receiving recognition by
international organizations and innovation contests. Recently we participated in the European
Project Awards competition (http://europeanprojects.org/awards2013), organized every year by
the European Projects Association, where we ranked fifth among many promising and innovative
projects of young researchers. The following certification was received in acknowledgement of
our achievement.
